Alternative Dispute Resolution & Litigation Consulting Services
Less Adversarial. More Advisory.
From Classroom to Courtroom

About Jim Goodwin, M.A., J.D.

Beginning in 2026, after nearly thirty years as a full-time litigator, and just shy of 60 jury trials, I have transitioned to semi-retirement and am no longer accepting new cases as lead trial counsel. I now focus my practice on providing advisory and alternate dispute-resolution services. My goal is simple: help clients avoid litigation whenever possible, and to resolve conflicts efficiently, thoughtfully, and on their own terms when litigation cannot be avoided.

My interest in alternative dispute resolution began in graduate school, where I studied communication theory. Today, I combine those principles with decades of courtroom experience to help parties find practical, durable solutions. I offer mediation, arbitration, jury selection, and litigation consulting services designed to reduce risk, control costs, and move matters forward.
Although I am stepping away from serving as lead trial counsel, I remain deeply connected to the courtroom. When litigation is necessary, I can assist strategically or help you find the right advocate for your case.

Background
I was born and raised in small-town Colorado. A serious illness during my teenage years reshaped my perspective and taught me to approach life—and conflict—with intention and empathy. That experience continues to inform how I work with clients today.

Although much of my litigation career has been on the defense side, I understand firsthand the human impact of injury, loss, and uncertainty. My goal is always to help people reach closure and peace wherever possible.

Career Experience
I began my legal career in 1997 with the Pima County Attorney’s Office, where I was immediately entrusted with hundreds of active criminal cases. The experience sharpened my ability to identify what truly matters, make sound decisions under pressure, and stay organized in fast-moving environments.

I later transitioned to civil practice with a large Phoenix firm, where I developed my skills under exceptional mentors. Over time, I was recruited to a national firm, became a partner, and represented Fortune 500 companies in complex, high-exposure matters with nationwide implications.

In the years since, I have led practices in mid-sized and boutique firms and have operated a successful solo practice since 2016. This breadth of experience has given me a practical understanding not only of litigation strategy but also of the business realities clients face.

I have handled both criminal and civil matters, represented plaintiffs and defendants, and tried cases across Arizona—from small claims court all the way up to the Arizona Supreme Court. I am known for being self-sufficient, prepared, and steady under pressure.

In Summary
With nearly three decades of courtroom and trial experience, I bring seasoned judgment, strategic insight, and a balanced perspective to every matter. Whether serving as a mediator, arbitrator, or consultant, my focus is always the same: helping clients resolve disputes efficiently, fairly, and with confidence.
